If you are experiencing weird issues after upgrading your hardware, or you’ve just upgraded to the latest hardware device and aren’t seeing the performance you’d like, you might want to remove the old drivers which are still installed for the old hardware, even though you can’t normally see them in device manager.

What you have to do is set a less-known flag to allow you to see non-present devices, and then launch device manager. You’ll then see the old devices in the list, and can uninstall the drivers for them.

In Windows 7 or Vista, the first thing you’ll need to do is open a command prompt in administrator mode. Type cmd into the start menu search box, and then use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrator mode. (You can also right-click on the command prompt and choose Run as Administrator)

Now paste in the following line:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

Then type in devmgmt.msc to start up Device Manager from the administrator command prompt:

Once you are in Device Manager, go to the View menu and choose Show Hidden Devices, which will show all the device drivers including things that aren’t currently installed in your computer.

Notice how I have 6 mice in the list, even though I only have two installed (and my drawing tablet). The other 3 mice are old mice that I’ve used until they died…. the Geek tends to wear through input devices very quickly since he never leaves the computer…

You can right-click on the driver and then choose Uninstall from the menu to remove the drivers for that old hardware.

I’ve found that this can resolve a lot of weird issues, and even increase performance on some machines where you’ve upgraded a ton of times. This isn’t necessarily going to increase performance, but it’s nice to have a tidy computer nonetheless.

This tip also works the same in Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

Help completely reinstalling PS3 controller drivers

EDIT To anyone wondering if I got it all working (the pairing, streaming from PC to RPi2 etc.) -- I DID! In short, I'm using Recalbox OS to achieve a seamless Kodi + Retropie/Emulationstation + Moonlight steam streaming setup, ALL controlled with my PS3 controller (even Kodi). To understand what I mean I have to explain what I did from beginning to end.

I started by getting a Raspbian image from raspberry pi's download page (no NOOBS installer). I wrote this to an SD Card and booted up. No problems.

Then my goal was to install moonlight-embedded to stream my steam games to my TV through my RPi2. So I followed this guide: http://embedded-software-architecture.com/?page_id=140 followed by this guide for the PS3 Controller for Moonlight: http://embedded-software-architecture.com/?page_id=147

All went well, but my PS3 controller wouldn't work after following the guide (even though it paired correctly and my Bluetooth adapter was detected). So at that point I figured I'd continue with installing RetroPie, and reinstall the PS3 drivers from Retropie_setup.sh after it installed.

Once entering Retropie_setup.sh and choosing to install the PS3 drivers from the advanced menu, it said the drivers were already installed (so it didn't attempt installing them again). I first tried following the instructions by plugging my PS3 controller into the Pi, then unplugging it and pressing the PS button to see if it would pair with the bluetooth adapter, but it didn't. Just kept blinking its leds.

So at that point I decided to reboot the Pi and go back into Retropie_setup.sh but this time choosing to uninstall PS3 drivers. The console text went by pretty fast but I noticed it saying it successfully stopped the sixad daemon and removed sixad. 'Good' I thought, not it's uninstalled and I can reboot then reinstall it.

So I reboot and choose install ps3 drivers again through the retropie_setup script, but it keeps saying I already have the drivers installed. I tried uninstalling them through the same menu again but this time I have time to see the console giving me a warning saying its trying to uninstall a package that doesnt exist (namely sixad) which makes sense since I uninstalled it earlier.

My point is that I just want to re-initiate the installation of the PS3 drivers so they work properly. Doing it through Moonlight-embedded and then retropie was not a good idea, but surely there must be a way to re-trigger it and uninstall/reinstall it properly?

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm having a hard time finding a solution to my problem.
